Whether you’re in a small apartment or a large landed property, having an organised, designated space for your laundry supplies is essential.
If you’ve just moved into a new home, though, you might not know where to start when it comes to setting up a functioning laundry area (especially if it’s completely unfurnished!). But not to worry, we’re here to guide you through it! Just follow the basic guidelines we’ve outlined below;
Before getting started on planning out what your laundry space will look like, we recommend settling on and buying a washing machine first.
That way, once you’ve found a good spot in the house for your washing machine to be installed, you can design your laundry space around it.
Perhaps the most important aspect of your laundry room (besides the actual washing machine, of course) is having a laundry system that works for you and your family to ensure everyone’s laundry is dealt with consistently and efficiently.
For example, you can keep a laundry hamper in each family member’s room, and one centralised hamper in your laundry space with 3 compartments designated for lights, darks, and items that need handwashing.
Ensure that each family member knows it’s their responsibility to empty their hampers into the centralised hamper at least once a week, so that everything is ready to be washed on your designated laundry day.
You could buy inexpensive, foldable drying racks, or wall-mounted racks for when you need to dry your clothes indoors.
Ensure your laundry space is also well-ventilated so that your clothes are able to dry well. If possible, set up your space near a window to get plenty of sunlight and fresh air coming into your space. Alternatively, you could also keep a standing fan in the area to keep the air well-circulated.
Whatever your storage options are, make sure they’re practical above all else. Ensure all your laundry supplies are kept in easily accessible places.
Install open shelves or racks that can also be used to keep other household cleaning supplies and products — one row for detergent and fabric softeners, and another row for tools to clean your house.
If your space is big enough, consider installing wall cabinets to neatly keep your supplies away. This is another simple way to utilise vertical storage space to avoid clutter. Pro-tip: attach led lights below your cabinets to brighten up the dark spaces of your laundry room.
If you have a work surface (i.e. a countertop or table) below these cabinets, attaching light strips to the bottom of your wall cabinets provides good lighting.
